The failure that saved AI: the developers of the long-suffering Gollum said that ChatGPT posted an apology for the terrible state of the game, and they did not even know about it

In May, people were shocked by the release of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, because it was so terrible that it received a 1-star rating on Metacritic. The game was full of bugs, and the stealth mechanics did not work correctly. Later, the developers apologised to the community, but as it turned out, it was ChatGPT that did it.

Here's What We Know

Gollum developers from Daedalic Entertainment talked to the authors of the German YouTube channel Game Two and told the story that the apology post was generated by ChatGPT AI. The developers claim that they were not aware of the apology and its content before it was published, and that it was entirely handled by Nacon.

Gollum's budget is $15 million, which is very modest for a AAA game, which is what this project wanted to show itself to be. Paul Schulze, CTO of Daedalic, said that although the studio employed people who had been developers for 10, 15, 20 years, and they are good, they cannot work magic if they are not given the funds. Also, due to the lack of time, we had to remove some characters, scenes, and mechanics.

Flashback

Daedalic Entertainment has stopped developing games. The German studio will lay off a quarter of its staff, reorganise, and will now publish third-party games.
