Warner Bros. Discovery sees potential in turning its most successful game franchises into "game services"
David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said that the company wants to turn its most successful game franchises into "game services".
Here's What We Know
During the conversation with investors, David said that such franchises as Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Batman, and Mortal Kombat can bring billions of dollars as game services. Zaslav believes that thanks to multi-platform, free updates, and 3-4 years of support for each such project, it will help to attract more players who spend more time on more platforms.
Currently, Warner Brothers Discovery is in the process of scaling up and sees significant opportunities to generate more revenue.
However, it is worth noting that game services are losing their popularity and exhausting players because there are too many of them. Moreover, one of the most profitable and popular games in 2023 was Hogwarts Legacy, which is a story-driven game with over 700 million hours of play. And Hogwarts Legacy is owned by Warner Brothers. Therefore, it is still difficult to imagine how successful the decision to transfer all popular WB franchises to the game service will be in the long run.
