The conclusions are wrong: Warner Bros. will focus on releasing service games instead of big-budget projects
In 2023, Warner Bros. gaming division Warner Bros. released the super-popular single-player game Hogwarts Legacy, which sold over 22 million copies and won the love of Harry Potter fans.
Last month saw the release of the obviously failed action game Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, which is based on the game-service concept. Moreover, media holding Warner Bros. Discovery openly recognised the release of the action film as unsuccessful.
It would seem that the conclusion is obvious: refusal from service games in favour of full-fledged story-oriented projects, but the company does exactly the opposite.
Here's What We Know
The head of the game direction Warner Bros. Discovery J.B. Perrette said that the company will continue to increase production of service, mobile and conditionally free games.
Surprisingly, he justified the rejection of big-budget story games by the fact that Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League failed on the back of the successful Hogwarts Legacy. Hence, according to his logic: fewer good games - mediocre projects will look better.
Most likely, J.B. Perrett had something else in mind, as his logic chain looks frankly strange and can cost the company huge financial losses. Especially against the background of experts' opinion, who are convinced that if Suicide Squad was made as a story game, albeit a co-operative one, it would have a better chance of success.
Warner Bros. owns a huge number of the most popular franchises, so their developers always have material that can be used to create service games, but whether it's worth it is a big question.
