Sony patents unique "trigger point replay" system thanks to streaming
A recent patent application from Sony shows that the company is continuing to explore the possibility of players replaying the game from specific moments during the broadcast and re-experiencing the storyline.
Here's What We Know
According to the Exporter, the patent "Content Streaming With Gameplay Launch" was filed on 11 July 2023 and published on 2 November. It describes a game that includes various "media content trigger points", which are moments from which a player can start a replay that will be available through a "platform, publisher, or third-party publisher". These trigger points cover events such as boss battles or completing a quest, or when a player levels up. Each trigger point is associated with a "game data set", which can be based on the user's gameplay or determined by the platform/publisher. Players will be able to select a trigger point and replay the game.
Sony claims that their "replay" system will provide a "unique user experience for consuming media content with interactive gameplay", allowing players to "selectively replay parts" of a game and experience the story, referring to the games' "film cutscenes" as a source of inspiration. Instead of playing through the entire game again, players can dip into key plot points and relive them or make different decisions in non-linear scenarios.
