Ukraine has modified the Neptun anti-ship cruise missile - it has a warhead weighing 350kg and can destroy targets at a distance of up to 400km
Last week, a Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile launcher was destroyed on Cape Tarkhankut in Crimea. As it turned out, the strike was carried out by a Neptun anti-ship missile after all.
Here's What We Know
After the publication of the video of the destruction of the S-400, it was reported that the strike was carried out by a Ukrainian-made Neptun anti-ship missile. Then Alexey Danilov, head of the National Security and Defence Council said that Ukraine had developed a new missile, but did not disclose details.
Now it has emerged that the S-400 managed to destroy the anti-ship cruise missile "Neptun", which was modified to hit ground targets. This is reported by the publication The war Zone, referring to one of the employees of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
The launch range has been increased to 400 kilometres and the weight of the warhead from 150 kg to 350 kg. The modified missile will allow Ukraine to destroy military facilities on the territory of Russia, which cannot be done with Western weapons.
By the way, the Russian Defence Ministry recently announced for the first time that it had destroyed the Ukrainian Neptun missile. At the same time, the defence ministry did not provide any details about the interception, let alone evidence.
The modified missile has a guidance system based on satellite signals. The infrared homing system captures the target using a pre-loaded image. In case of mismatch, the missile stops attacking.
Unfortunately, so far Ukraine cannot boast of high production rates. According to the official, only a few dozen modified Neptune missiles have been produced.
