Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract to provide production support for Trident II intercontinental ballistic missiles for the Ohio and Vanguard class nuclear-powered submarines
Lockheed Martin will provide production support for Trident II (D5) intercontinental ballistic missiles. The signing of the contract was announced on the official website of the US Department of Defence.
Here's What We Know
The contract does not have a fixed price, but its amount cannot exceed $9.736 million. The funds will be used for long lead time materials, labour, planning and scheduling.
All of this is required to support the Trident II (D5) production schedule in fiscal year 2024, which begins 1 October 2023. The deadline for contract performance is 30 September 2028. Work will take place at Lockheed Martin Space's Florida facility.
The Trident II (D5) is a fourth-generation intercontinental ballistic missile designed for launch from nuclear-powered submarines. Trident II carriers are Ohio-class (USA) and Vanguard-class (UK) submarines.
The intercontinental ballistic missile has a maximum launch range of over 12,000 kilometres. The range is affected by the number of nuclear warheads (up to eight). Fully loaded, it can strike at a range of just over 7,000 kilometres. The US Navy website states that the cost of the Trident II (D5) is $30.9 million.
