It became known today that the US president promised the Ukrainian president the delivery of the first batch of ATACMS. According to The Washington Post, it is about ballistic missiles with cluster warheads.
Here's What We Know
Talks about ATACMS with a cluster warhead began a week and a half ago. The Reuters news agency wrote that the White House was considering supplying cluster-armed ballistic missiles and/or GMLRS.
The Washington Post cited several people who are close to the Joe Biden administration. However, the tactical ballistic missile version has not been specified at this time. We await official comment from the White House.
If we're talking about ATACMS with a cluster warhead, we're talking about the M39 and M39A1 variants. The first configuration has a 560kg warhead with 950 submunitions. The launch range is 165 kilometres. The second variant can hit targets within a radius of 300 kilometres. The weight of the warhead has been reduced to 160kg and the number of submunitions to 275.
