The Republic of Korea showed L-SAM air defence systems, a mysterious UAV, K2 tanks and K9 howitzers, but did not demonstrate the latest Hyunmoo V ballistic missile
The Republic of Korea held a military parade for the first time in 10 years. Many weapons were demonstrated at the event, but we did not see the latest ballistic missile.
Here's What We Know
As you might have guessed, we are talking about the Hyunmoo V. According to open sources, it has a maximum launch range of 3,000 kilometres and a warhead weighing a record 9,000kg. It is expected that the new ballistic missile will be launched into mass production at the end of this year.
By the way, we recently learnt that the Republic of Korea wants to develop a new vertical launch system for diesel-electric submarines. It is possible that it will be built specifically for Hyunmoo V ballistic missile launches.
As for the military parade, Seoul displayed more than 170 pieces of military equipment. Among them were K2 Black Panther tanks, K9 Thunder howitzers, missile launchers and unmanned aerial vehicles. Scheduled flights of AH-64 Apache helicopters and fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jets were cancelled due to bad weather.
South Korea has revealed the L-SAM air defence system. It is designed to intercept air threats at altitudes of up to 60 kilometres. Barrage munitions and drones were also demonstrated, including a mysterious UAV that looks like a Northrop Grumman X-47B.
