The Russians are allegedly developing a high-precision surface-to-surface missile with an increased warhead and launch range for the S-400 Triumf air defence system
Russian officials have announced work on a new missile for the S-400 Triumf air defence system. And it will be involved in ground-to-ground operations.
Here's What We Know
It seems that the Russians have decided to copy the approach of the US military, which uses the SM-6 anti-aircraft missile in the Typhon system. The SM-6, along with Tomahawk cruise missiles, can be used to strike surface targets.
A Russian propaganda statement said the new missile will be highly accurate. It will receive a higher-power warhead and will have an extended launch range. It is possible that it will not be a completely new development, but a modification of an existing surface-to-air missile.
The Russian authorities said in a statement that the tests had been conducted at the Kapustin Yar test range in the Astrakhan region, where the S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile system had been moved. At the same time, the Russians showed only the launchers.
