The first video of the launch of the S-200 anti-aircraft missile modified to hit ground targets has been published
It seems to be the first time we have seen the launch of a missile of the S-200 air defence system, which has been modified to strike ground targets. Previously there was already information about such a weapon.
Here's What We Know
Video of the launch of the 5B28 missile was published by Ukrainian journalist Yuri Butusov. In mid-summer, the Russians reported that Ukraine was able to modify the missile of anti-aircraft missile system S-200 for strikes on ground targets. In particular, on the Kerch bridge.
The S-200 air defence system appeared about 60 years ago. It was created to destroy American Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft and B-52 Stratofortress nuclear bombers. In addition to the 5B28, the complex can engage 5B21, 5B21B and 5B28M anti-aircraft missiles.
The Soviet Union exported S-200 complexes, but they have long been obsolete. Most countries decommissioned their air defence systems 20-30 years ago. Ukraine officially did so 10 years ago.
The launch range of an anti-aircraft missile in ground-to-air mode is up to 300 kilometres. Analysts believe that in case of modification, Ukrainian specialists could improve accuracy and increase the radius of application.
