Philippines may acquire additional coastal systems with BrahMos anti-ship missiles with a range of 290 km
The Philippine Army is working to reinforce its coastline. To do so, it may purchase an additional batch of BrahMos systems.
Here's What We Know
The navy ordered three batteries of BrahMos coastal missile systems from India in 2022. Deliveries will begin in December 2023. According to new information, the Philippines wants to order more than three more batteries.
Last year, the Philippines allocated $375 million to acquire the BrahMos. Their configuration is not specified. Typically, a battery consists of three mobile launchers, each of which can fire a salvo of two or three missiles. It also includes a control station, support vehicles and radar.
BrahMos is based on the Russian Onyx missile. The export version has a range of 290 kilometres. The anti-ship missile is equipped with a 200-300kg warhead and can reach speeds of up to Mach 2.8 (almost 1km/s).
