Japan wants to purchase 63 RIM-116E RAM Block 2B anti-aircraft missiles for more than $74 million
Japan has moved closer to buying US anti-aircraft missiles. The potential sale has been approved by the US State Department.
Here's What We Know
The Land of the Rising Sun has requested the purchase of 63 RIM-116E RAM (Rolling Airframe Missiles) missile interceptors in Block 2B configuration. The potential deal is worth $74.6 million. The US Congress has until the end of next month to approve the sale.
The deal will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by strengthening a key ally in the Indo-Pacific region. By buying RIM-116E RAM missiles, the Land of the Rising Sun will be able to strengthen the Maritime Self-Defence Force.
The potential sale will improve Japan's ability to counter current and future threats. However, the delivery of the RIM-116E RAM will not change the basic balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region. Raytheon Missiles and Defence will be the prime contractor.
