Spain has approved funding for the purchase of US AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) missiles. This will be the second AMRAAM order for the country in less than a year.
Here's What We Know
The country's authorities have approved the purchase of 72 AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles in C-8 configuration and related equipment. The deal will be worth $105 million.The C-8 is the newest version of the AIM-120 air-to-air missile for export. There is also a D-3 configuration, but it is being developed for the Pentagon.
Note that Spain ordered 92 missiles in the C-7 configuration last autumn. The Spanish Air Force's AMRAAM carriers are the F/A-18 Hornet and Eurofighter Typhoon fighters. In addition, Spain uses AMRAAMs in NASAMS air defence systems.
