Israel is the first in history to intercept a ballistic missile in space - the Arrow system shot down the target outside the atmosphere
Israel became the first country in history to intercept a missile outside the atmosphere. The Arrow missile defence system was used for this purpose.
Here's What We Know
While the US is deploying THAAD systems in the Middle East, Israel is using the Arrow missile defence system to intercept ballistic threats. It was recently tested in real combat for the first time.
We wrote about the Arrow application last week. As it became known, it was not just the first work of the missile defence system. A ballistic missile launched by Iranian proxies from Yemen was intercepted outside the atmosphere.
The Arrow system was developed by Israel in conjunction with the US. It is designed specifically to intercept ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere. The most modern version of the system is called Arrow-3. It uses a missile interceptor that can shoot down airborne threats at an altitude of more than 100 kilometres and a speed of over Mach 5 (6174 km/h).
