Israel to sell $1.2 billion worth of Barak MX air defence systems to unnamed country
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is making one of the biggest deals in its history. The Israeli company will sell Barak MX air defence systems.
Here's What We Know
IAI is selling Arrow-3 missile defence systems to Germany, while India has ordered Barak 8 surface-to-air missile systems. The cost was $4.3bn and $1.8bn respectively. The sale of the Barak MX ranks third. The deal is valued at $1.2bn.
Officially, the buyer of the Barak MX has not been disclosed. Neither IAI nor the Israeli Ministry of Defence has specified the details of the deal. However, Defence Industry Europe writes that the buyer of the air defence systems is Azerbaijan.
Barak MX includes three air defence systems: Short-Medium Range, Longe Range and Extended Range. They can intercept aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones at an altitude of up to 30 kilometres and at a range of up to 150 kilometres.
Extended Range is the only version of the air defence system that can intercept operational-tactical ballistic missiles. In particular, Russian Iskander-M missiles with a range of up to 500 kilometres.
