Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: iPhone-like titanium frame, 200 MP camera and artificial intelligence features for $1400
Samsung is holding a presentation today and unveiling its new flagship Galaxy S24 range. Traditionally, there are three models in it, but we'll start with the best - Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Here's What We've Seen
Externally, the new top smartphone is similar to last year's Galaxy S23 Ultra, but there are still some differences. First of all, the bezel is made of titanium alloy instead of aluminium. Hello, iPhone 15 Pro! This has not affected the dimensions of the smartphone in any way: thanks to the reduced bezels it is slightly thinner (by 0.3 mm) and shorter (by 1.1 mm), and weighs 1 gram less. The titanium frame is complemented by new Gorilla Glass Armor glass on the front and back, which is 4 times stronger and 75% less reflective.
On top of that, the screen is now completely flat, with no curves around the edges. It's a 6.8-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a variable refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz and a brightness of 2600 nits. A neat little cutout houses the 12-megapixel front camera.
The rear panel houses the main camera modules: a 200 MP wide-angle module (f/1.7), a new 50 MP telephoto lens with optical stabilisation and 5x optical zoom, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2) and a 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.
Artificial intelligence is on trend this year, so it's an important part of the camera system. ProVision Engine is an AI-based toolkit that can erase objects and fill in empty space. Instant Slow-mo can generate extra frames to smoothly slow down certain moments in a video. And a dedicated ISP unit for the front and rear camera will combat noise.
Galaxy S24 Ultra is equipped with a special version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor for Galaxy, and in all countries. This is what has enabled a number of AI features such as Live Translate, Interpreter and Chat Assist. These provide two-way voice and text translation in real-time. Currently, 13 languages are supported.
Also noteworthy is the Circle to Search feature, developed in co-operation with Google. It allows you to control the search engine using gestures: press and hold the home button and you can circle, highlight, write or tap something on the screen to get search results.
A 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging support is responsible for battery life. Other specs include stylus operation, Wi-Fi 7, IP68 waterproofing and Android 14 with One UI 6.1 out of the box. The good news was an increase in the length of support: the Galaxy S24 series will receive software updates for 7 years.
Here's What It Costs
The Galaxy S24 Ultra is available in Titanium Gray, Titanium Black, Titanium Violet and Titanium Yellow colours. It costs from $1400 for the base configuration with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of inbuilt storage. Pre-order acceptance starts from today and retail sales will begin on 30 January.
