Saildrone UAV captured a view from the center of Hurricane Fiona, which hit Canada

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration used a Saildrone maritime drone to study Hurricane Fiona.

The agency has long used the Saildrone to look for the causes of rapidly intensifying storms. On the new mission, the drone was able to record video while inside Category 4 Hurricane Fiona, which struck Canada's east coast last weekend.

On Sept. 22, Saildrone was sent to the center of the hurricane, which at the time was near Bermuda. During its missions, the drone faced winds of over 160 km/h and waves over 15 meters high.

The SD 1078 drone was used to investigate Hurricane Fiona. It is one of seven "hurricane" drones that carry out their missions in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Scientists are using them to collect real-time data to understand the physical processes that occur within hurricanes. This knowledge is expected to help improve the accuracy of storm forecasting and reduce loss of life by preparing coastal areas in a timely manner.
