Embraer, one of the market leaders in passenger aircraft, has come up with an interesting way to solve the problem of fear of air travel. The manufacturer has filed a patent for a transcranial cortical stimulation system. It is often used to treat depression or mental illness.

Here's What We Know

The Brazilian aircraft company applied for a patent for a brain stimulation system for well-being in 2016. The patent office approved it six years later. Embraer believes the system will improve the well-being of people who have a fear of flying on planes.

The technology includes a surveillance camera that is supposed to monitor a person's face. For the system to work, software will be developed that will be able to read emotions from the video.

The passenger will be subjected to rTMS, magnetic stimulation or pulsed ultrasound. As conceived by Embraer, the system will automatically detect human emotions and offer one method of brain stimulation based on this. In simple terms, Embraer wants to shock passengers in order to calm them down. It is far from certain that this idea will be realized.
