Figure 01 - a new humanoid robot for planetary colonisation that surpasses Tesla Optimus in intelligence and strength
Tesla showed off its Optimus humanoid robots again at Investor Day 2023 a few days ago. They already have a competitor. It is called Figure 01.
Here's What We Know
The developer of the device is a young company called Figure. The startup was founded last year and has already introduced its robot. Figure 01 is powered by artificial intelligence. According to the manufacturer, the humanoid is prone to self-learning and improving its skills.
Figure 01 is 168 cm tall and weighs 60 kg. The robot has a movement speed of 1.2 m/s (3.6 km/h), so in case of an uprising of machines you can easily get away from it. The device runs on battery power for 5 hours.
Unlike the Tesla Optimus, our hero boasts improved electric drives that make its movements smoother. The head of the startup hopes that in the future, the humanoid's gait will not differ from that of humans.
The company has developed five prototypes. Figure 01 has 25 levels of freedom. The robot is able to bend over, pick up an object weighing up to 20 kg from the floor and place it on a cupboard. In the near future the developers intend to improve mobility of arms, and in 2024 Figure will launch a pilot programme with 50 robots working in the warehouse. But the entire project cycle will take two to three decades to complete.
The startup has set ambitious plans that go beyond using humanoids in shops, manufacturing and warehouses. The company believes a group of Figure 01 humanoid robots could colonise other planets.
