Axiom Space unveils spacesuit for Artemis III mission when humans return to the Moon after 53 years
Astronauts are expected to return to the Moon in 2025. The landing will take place as part of the Artemis III mission, 53 years after Apollo 17. Axiom Space has already unveiled the spacesuit that will be used during the expedition.
Here's What We Know
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will spend $1.26 billion on next-generation spacesuits as part of the Artemis lunar programme. At the same time, the space agency will rent the suits.
The new spacesuits will have protection against extreme temperatures and radiation exposure. Axiom Space has demonstrated the prototype in its signature colours (blue, orange and black), but the final version will have a white finish.
The suit was developed in conjunction with Esther Marquis, designer of clothing for the sci-fi series. KBR, Air-Lock, Arrow Science and Technology, David Clark Company, Paragon Space Development Corporation, Sophic Synergistics and APT Research also contributed to the design.
The new comic suit is based on the classic Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) spacesuit, which was developed by NASA engineers. Axiom Space says its new design will provide astronauts with greater flexibility and tools for scientific exploration on the moon.
