In a galaxy far, far away, signs of water have been found

Astronomers have detected signs of water in the spectrum of molecular gas in a galaxy 12.88 billion light-years from our planet.

What we know

ALMA telescopes in the Atacama Desert, Chile, helped make the discovery. Scientists say it's the furthest detection of water in history.

Telescopes allow observing the early Universe, giving specialists an opportunity to study the beginnings of biological life. This time, water has been found in one of the two galaxies with the identifier SPT0311-58, which were discovered four years ago.

In addition to water molecules, scientists have detected carbon monoxide. This may mean that the evolution of the molecular Universe may have begun immediately after the formation of lithium, helium and hydrogen in early stars.
