SpaceX can finally connect smartphones to Starlink. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted the company the appropriate authorisation.

Here's What We Know

The US regulator has approved the use of satellite internet by cellular operator T-Mobile. For now, the Commission authorises the limited use of modified second-generation spacecraft for testing.

The issued document allows SpaceX to use the frequency bands 1990-1995 MHz and 1910-1915 MHz. The company will be able to evaluate the functionality of Starlink satellite antennas without the need for full-scale deployment.

The licence obliges SpaceX to cooperate with other mobile operators so that satellite internet for smartphones does not create radio interference. If the latter occurs, the company must immediately abort the test and send a report to the commission.

SpaceX has not yet provided the regulator with a Schedule S form with a list of technical and operational parameters of the Starlink spacecraft. Because of this, the FCC has not given the company permission to fully operate Starlink with smartphones.
