Amazon has tested a laser communication link between two prototype Project Kuiper internet satellites. The spacecraft were launched into orbit to test the technology a few weeks ago.

Here's What We Know

Amazon's satellite internet will provide planes, cruise ships and remote areas with high-speed internet access. In addition, Project Kuiper can become a backup communications channel for the US military. For this purpose, the US Department of Defence awarded the company a $67 million grant last year.

Amazon tested space laser communication between two prototype satellites early last month. The company said the installation of successful optical links allowed the internet satellites to exchange data at speeds of up to 100Gbps. The test period lasted more than an hour.

The data transferred simulated visiting websites, watching videos and paying for online shopping in shops. Amazon says the test period sent data over a distance of 1,000 kilometres.
