Take-Two subpoenas Microsoft and Discord to unmask GTA VI leaker Cyberleek

Take-Two Interactive has gone to court to identify the person or group behind a wave of GTA VI gameplay leaks, filing DMCA subpoenas against Microsoft and Discord on August 20 in the Southern District of New York. The company is demanding user data linked to accounts operated by Cyberleek, with a hard deadline of September 4 — just days before an official Netflix showcase on August 27. The leaks have already wiped roughly $2 billion from Take-Two's market capitalization, per DualShockers, sending shares from around $248 to $236 in three trading days.

What Take-Two is asking for

The subpoenas are broad. According to Kotaku, Take-Two wants IP addresses, phone numbers, linked Xbox and Google accounts, device identifiers, Microsoft telemetry data, and the contents of any OneDrive storage connected to Cyberleek's accounts. A DMCA subpoena doesn't require a full lawsuit — it's a faster legal tool that compels platforms to hand over identifying information. Whether Microsoft or Discord will comply, challenge the scope, or request an extension is still unknown. The court had not confirmed approval of the subpoenas at the time of writing.

Who is Cyberleek — and why they did it

Cyberleek framed the leaks as protest, not profit. The group posted gameplay footage showing protagonist Jason, map details, and core mechanics, then published a manifesto demanding that Rockstar abandon digital-only releases, preserve single-player content, and drop what it called "fake" DLC. The clips, drawn from 2022–2023 era builds, spread rapidly across Discord servers, X, and video platforms.

The legal move echoes the 2022 GTA VI breach, when Arion Kurtaj — then 18 — leaked development footage and was later sentenced in 2024. That case set a clear precedent: leaking major game IP carries serious criminal consequences.

The launch stays on track

Take-Two's leadership has not publicly commented on the leaks but has given no indication of pushing back the November 19 release date. GTA VI launches exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Stock recovery after the initial dip suggests investors believe the launch timeline is intact, with the company targeting $8.1 billion in revenue for fiscal 2027 — a figure that depends heavily on maintaining marketing control through the autumn.
