Here's What We Know
The Swedish authorities have signed a contract with BAE Systems for the production and delivery of 48 self-propelled artillery units Archer of 155 mm calibre. The deal was worth approximately $500 million. Deliveries will begin in 2025.
The Archer is the most important component of Swedish barrel artillery. This was stated by Lena Gillström, president of BAE Systems Bofors. The new howitzers will use the Rheinmetall RMMV HX2 8x8 as the chassis.
Sweden both uses the Archer itself and supplies the guns to other countries. In particular, the United Kingdom recently received 14 Swedish-made self-propelled howitzers. They were a replacement for 32 AS90 artillery units, which the UK transferred to Ukraine.
Sweden itself supplied the Ukrainian Armed Forces with eight Archer wheeled howitzers. Together with them, Ukraine received 10 main battle tanks Stridsvagn 122 (Swedish version of Leopard 2) from the Scandinavian country.
