Here's What We Know
The upgrade brought the L52 155mm cannon, developed by German defence company Rheinmetall. The length of the barrel has increased from 39 to 52 calibres, increasing the range of fire.
BAE Systems conducted a series of tests on the M109A7 to see if the upgrade was viable. The tests of the self-propelled artillery unit were organised at Camp Ripley Proving Ground, Minnesota.
According to the manufacturer, the artillery system demonstrated stable performance during the tests. BAE Systems intends to continue testing the M109A7 with the new gun next year. The tests will be aimed at evaluating the range of fire with different types of artillery ammunition.
