The U.S. will launch the country's first hydrogen passenger train in 2024
In two years, the United States will launch the country's first hydrogen fuel cell passenger train.
Here's What We Know
Authorities in San Bernardino County (California) have already signed an agreement to that effect. The first trains will start running on the state's railroads in 2024. In this case, the authorities are ready to buy 25 more trains in the future.
The current agreement provides for the production of four trains Stadler FLIRT H2. Each will be able to carry out passenger transportation between cities. The Swiss company Stadler already has several contracts for hydrogen trains. It has sold approximately 2,000 trains to 21 countries.
The Stadler FLIRT H2 uses engines from the Canadian company Ballard Power Systems. The signed contract involves the delivery of six FCmove-HD+ power units. Power is 100 kW (136 hp). During operation these engines emit condensed water and water vapor instead of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
