Rolls-Royce and easyJet have announced the first test of an aircraft engine that runs on hydrogen.

Here's What We Know

The companies believe hydrogen could become the jet fuel of the future. They claim that the gas will power engines for civilian aircraft, and have already begun preparations for the second phase of testing.

Rolls-Royce's AE 2100-A engine was used for the experiment. The tests took place in the United Kingdom. The supplier of gas was the European Marine Energy Center (EMEC). It is noted that for the test was used the so-called "green" hydrogen, which is not harmful to the environment. It was produced on the Orkney Islands of the United Kingdom with the help of tidal and wind generators.

Grazia Vittadini, Rolls-Royce technical director, called the successful test an exciting milestone. In the future easyJet and Rolls-Royce will conduct a series of new experiments, the crowning achievement of which will be a test of the Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engine.
