Scientists at a university in Istanbul, Turkey, have unveiled their latest development: a tiny sensor that can detect spoiled food in the fridge.

Here's How It Works

The sensor can monitor protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, chicken and more. When such food begins to spoil, it releases biogenic amines - organic compounds that are toxic to humans. The sensor detects their quantity and can tell whether the meat is fresh or already spoiled and unfit for consumption.

At present, these indicators can only be monitored with special, expensive equipment. But a sensor developed by Turkish scientists can help reduce waste and prevent food poisoning.

The developers say the tiny sensor can be installed in a household refrigerator or in a shop window. It is cheap to manufacture and easy to use. The sensor connects via NFC to a smartphone and transmits information about the condition of meat to it. There is no need to charge it, as it uses a connection to a nearby smartphone to work autonomously.

Scientists have tested their development on chicken and beef samples stored under different conditions, and it has shown fairly accurate results.
