The Turkish defense company Baykar has tested an unmanned aerial vehicle with vertical takeoff and landing. The new drone is called Bayraktar VTOL.

Here's What We Know

The manufacturer has published a short-video report of the drone's successfully completed tests. As part of the test flight, the Bayraktar VTOL was able to take off from the ground and climb to an altitude of 8,000 feet (2,500 meters) before landing successfully.

The drone has a "flying wing" aerodynamic design, complete with two horizontal struts, each containing two propellers for vertical takeoff and landing. The UAV can operate in autonomous and semi-autonomous modes.

The Bayraktar VTOL is a tactical-level unmanned aerial vehicle. It will be used for reconnaissance and surveillance. Baykar is due to hand over the drone to the Turkish military next year. The Bayraktar VTOL is expected to be based on the Turkish Navy's flagship aircraft carrier TCG Anadolu.
