General Atomics integrates satellite communications systems into MQ-9A Reaper drones
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems announced at the IDEX arms show in the United Arab Emirates that it plans to complete the integration of satellite communications into its drones.
Here's What We Know
The drone manufacturer is looking for ways to reduce operating costs and reduce reliance on additional equipment. To do this, General Atomics wants to integrate low-Earth orbit satellite communications systems into its UAVs.
The MQ-9A Reaper drone has flown three successful missions this year as part of a satellite communications test programme. General Atomics refuses to disclose the provider, but it is likely to be the aerospace company SpaceX.
In the next phase, the manufacturer will evaluate the feasibility of integrating the satellite communications system into existing MQ-9A Reaper drones. According to C. Mark Brinkley of General Atomics, the company is already in discussions with several customers.
