Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine last year, France began to show interest in bomber munitions. Last week, Nexter was awarded a contract to develop a kamikaze drone.

Here's What We Know

The French Defence Innovation Agency, the US counterpart to DARPA, has signed a contract with Nexter to develop a remote-controlled, medium-range munition.

The kamikaze drone will be equipped with an anti-tank munition. The development will take place under the Larinae programme, which translates from Latin as "Seagull". The project was launched in May and will run until the end of 2024.

The hovering munition will get GPS and a camera. The range will be up to 80km and the time will be 3 hours. Nexter has not yet disclosed the cost of the project.
