Apple seems to be considering bringing back the luminous logo in future MacBook models.

A patent applied for in May of this year hints at it. It summarizes various implementations of "electronic devices with a partially mirrored backlit structure." Specifically, the document states:

An electronic device such as a laptop computer or other device may have a housing. Components such as a display and keyboard may be mounted in the housing. The rear of the housing may be provided with a logo. The logo or other structures in the device may be provided with a backlit partially reflective mirror. The mirror may provide the logo or other structures with a shiny appearance while blocking interior components from view. At the same time, the partial transparency of the mirror allows backlight illumination from within the device to pass through the mirror"At the same time,"An electronic device such as a laptop computer or other device may have a housing. Three Apple engineers, who joined the company in 2018, are listed as developers of the patent. So it's possible that Apple will change the technology in some way.

Flashback

The first Mac laptop with a glowing Apple logo was the 3rd generation PowerBook G3, which debuted in 1999. After a while, it was changed a bit - namely, flipping the "apple" to make it look right on the open lid. In 2015, Apple started doing away with glowing logos, and the 12-inch MacBook was the start of that. In 2016, a new generation of MacBook Pro models continued the trend, and Apple hasn't released a Mac laptop with a glowing logo since then.
