Bloomberg: Blood glucose measurement feature won't appear on Apple Watch until 3-7 years from now
Apple has long been developing a blood glucose measurement feature for the Apple Watch smartwatch. What stage the development is at and when to expect the new technology in the finished product, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman tells us.
Here's What We Know
Apple is looking to add non-invasive blood glucose monitoring technology to its smart watches. It will allow diabetics and, in general, all users to monitor their sugar levels without having to pierce their skin for a blood test. Apparently, it uses a special chip that transmits laser light under the skin to determine the concentration of glucose in the body.
According to Mark Gurman, Apple still needs to refine the algorithms and embedded sensors to bring the technology to market. It also needs to shrink the module to a size where it can fit inside the body of a smartwatch. This process, as the journalist assures, will take 3 to 7 years.
Incidentally, Apple started working on alternative methods of glucose monitoring after acquiring RareLight in 2010. The company then used a start-up called Avolante Health LLC to develop the technology at a secret facility before handing it over to the Design Research Group (XDG).
