The U.S. Army will receive light tanks for the first time since the Cold War. The Mobile Protected Firepower tank will become operational.

What we know

General Dynamics Land Systems is the winner of the Mobile Protected Firepower program. The contract value is $1 140,000,000. The U.S. Army will initially receive 96 tanks. First deliveries are scheduled for December 2023.

The tank Mobile Protected Firepower is built based on Griffin II. It will get a 105mm turret gun like the M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams. Now General Dynamics Land Systems has several pre-production models that have been shipped to the U.S. Army.

The lightweight tanks will become part of battalions that use exclusively JLTV and Humvee (HMMWV) as well as 50mm machine guns and 40mm automatic grenade launchers. They will help provide defensive firepower. The General Dynamics Land Systems will weigh 38 tons. By comparison, the tank M1 Abrams weighs 70 tons.
