The Great Britain may transfer AS90 self-propelled artillery units to Ukraine in a few days
On July 5, Boris Johnson spoke with Volodymyr Zelensky and confirmed the transfer of 10 SAU to Ukraine. The press release of the British government does not note the type of units, but there is only one 155-mm howitzer in service of the United Kingdom army - AS90.
What we know
The British army has 89 self-propelled artillery units, i.e. Ukraine will receive more than 10%. Work on AS90 began in the 1980s to replace the 105mm FV43 Abbot and 155mm M109 guns. Between 1992 and 1995, 179 artillery systems were produced with the cost of nearly $500 million.
AS90 has a semi-automated loading system that allows the first three shots to be fired in 10 seconds. After that, the rate of fire is reduced to two rounds per minute. Maximum range is 24.7 km to 30 km depending on the type of projectile.
They started talking about shipments of AS90 back in the spring, but Ukraine still has not received a single artillery system. The British government website indicates that deliveries will begin in the next few days or weeks. They will be sent to Ukraine along with the SAUs, kamikaze drones.
