The U.S. supports the transfer of German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine
The German news agency FAZ, citing its own sources, reported that the U.S. supports the provision of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
Here's What We Know
According to the newspaper, US authorities have tried several times to influence German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and persuade him to supply the tanks to Ukraine. All this time, the German government has argued that the USA does not send Abrams tanks to Ukraine and therefore Germany should not transfer the Leopard 2.
At the same time, it is noted that Washington does not demand from Berlin to send tanks to Ukraine, but only "will support the relevant decision", which Germany should come to on its own. A statement to this effect was made by advisor to the U.S. President Jake Sullivan in a conversation with his German colleague Jens Plötner back in mid-autumn. The administration of Olaf Scholz has not commented on this information. The chancellor's office only said that Berlin was in close contact with its allies (especially the USA) regarding the provision of military assistance to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
It should be noted that since February 24, 2022, Germany transferred to Ukraine five MARS II multiple rocket launchers, the latest IRIS-T air defense system, three dozen Gepard antiaircraft tanks, 14 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled artillery systems and COBRA radars. The full list is available on the German government website.
