On January 16, Great Britain may announce the provision of Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine
This week, Polish President Andrzej Duda, following his visit to Ukraine, announced the provision of a company of Leopard tanks. This was followed by information that the United Kingdom might send tanks to Ukraine. Officially, the provision of British combat vehicles may be announced as early as early next week.
Here's What We Know
According to The Guardian, the UK has already decided to provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with Challenger 2 tanks. At the moment we are talking about about 10 combat vehicles. This should be officially announced on 16 January 2023.
The UK itself has 227 Challenger tanks in service. Sending 10 combat vehicles will not change the course of combat operations, but it will be a signal to Germany. There is a probability that after such a step on the part of the United Kingdom, German authorities will approve the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
Currently there are over 2,000 Leopard 2 tanks in Europe. They are in service with the armies of 13 countries. However, any country which wants to send tanks to Ukraine must first get permission from Germany. This also applies to Poland.
Clarity about the provision of Western-style tanks, including Leopard 2 tanks, to the Ukrainian Armed Forces may be made next Friday. On January 20, the next meeting of the defense ministers will be held at the German Air Force base Ramstein.
