European allies continue to press the German government to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Berlin has not yet made a final decision, but that will change in the coming days.

Here's What We Know

Andrzej Duda recently announced Poland's readiness to provide Ukraine with a company of Leopard 2 tanks as part of the international coalition. Ukraine may receive German tanks from other European countries, but this requires German approval.

According to Bloomberg, a decision will be made as early as next week. Moreover, before January 20, when the next meeting of the defense ministers will take place at the German air force base Ramstein. A German official said on the condition of anonymity that Olaf Scholz may change his position on sending the Leopard 2 to Ukraine.

Previously, the chancellor was against it, as no other country had presented its tanks to Ukraine. However, as early as January 16, Great Britain may officially announce the transfer of Challenger 2 combat vehicles.

German government spokeswoman Chistiane Hoffmann claims that Poland has not submitted an official request for the Leopard 2 to Ukraine. According to her, in such a case, sending the tanks would be illegal.

On the other hand, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck believes that Germany should not stand in the way when other countries decide to support Ukraine with heavy weapons, even though the Leopard 2 tanks are German. Justice Minister Marco Buschmann is of the same opinion.
