Germany has more than 200 serviceable Leopard 2 tanks, 19 of which it can transfer to Ukraine - Der Spiegel
Der Spiegel writes that Germany now it has 212 Leopard 2 tanks of various modifications, and 19 of them it may transfer to Ukraine.
Here's What We Know
Journalists have received a list of all the Leopard 2 tank models that Germany has. It was compiled back in the early summer of 2022. According to this information, Germany has a total of 312 Leopard 2 tanks, but 99 of them were under repair last May, and one has already been decommissioned.
This means that 212 units are working Leopard 2s in 2A5, 2A6, 2A7 and 2A7V modifications. Leopard 2A7V, which is a modern version, has 53 units.
The publication's sources report that this list also contains information about which tank models are suitable for delivery to Ukraine. Presumably, these are 19 Leopard 2A5 tanks, which are used in exercises, that is, the German military can do without them. These tanks serve to simulate enemy forces in the army's combat training center.
However, so far this is only unofficial information and speculation, no final decision has been made. At a recent meeting of the Contact Group on Ukrainian defense issues, the allied countries were unable to unanimously decide on the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv. Nevertheless, Ukrainian servicemen will soon begin training on Leopard 2s, although there have been no announcements about their provision yet.
