Photos of the destruction of the system were published by the Come Back Alive charity. The Russian anti-aircraft missile system was hit by the 45th Independent Artillery Brigade using the US M142 HIMARS missile system.
SA-11 Gadfly is not the newest but still an effective medium-range air defence system. It is designed to intercept aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
The system was first tested in 1982 and a year later it was adopted for service. SA-11 Gadfly is capable of countering air threats that travel at oncoming speeds of up to 1 km/sec.
