Ukraine receives 45 Soviet aircraft from Western countries, including MiG-29 fighters and Su-25 attack aircraft
Ukrainian officials have been regularly talking about a severe shortage of fighter jets since 24 February 2022. In more than a year, Western countries have delivered several dozen warplanes, but all of them were Soviet-made.
Here's What We Know
According to CNN, the Ukrainian Air Force has received 45 Soviet-era aircraft from partners since 24 February 2022. Most of them are MiG-29 fighters. Western countries also donated a small number of Su-25 attack aircraft.
The main donors of planes were Poland, North Macedonia and Slovakia. It is worth noting that North Macedonia handed over Su-25 attack planes, which it itself had purchased from Ukraine a few years ago.
The advantage of the Soviet planes is that Ukrainian pilots are already familiar with the equipment. But in combat the pilots face the Russian fighters Su-35, which have the advantage of more modern missiles and radars. In simple terms, the Su-35 will see a target and fire a missile, while the Ukrainian pilot will not be aware of it.
