The U.S. is not yet planning to transfer tactical ballistic missiles ATACMS with a launch range of up to 300 km to Ukraine
CNN quoted its own sources saying that the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is not yet ready for a dramatic change in its approach to military aid to Ukraine.
Here's What We Know
It was recently reported that Ukraine has submitted a request for tanks, multiple rocket launchers, and ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles. However, despite the Armed Forces' recent successes, the White House believes that Ukraine's advance is too early to be considered a turning point in the war.
Officials acknowledge that the AFU has been able to make progress and has recaptured thousands of kilometers of territory in an effective counterattack. But they also believe that Russia has not exhausted its full military potential. The Biden administration believes that the balance of power on the battlefield has not yet changed enough for the United States to to dramatically change its military assistance strategy in the short term.
CNN writes that the United States is "not inclined" to transfer ATACMS tactical missiles for HIMARS and M270 MLRS multiple rocket launchers to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The White House believes that long-range missiles (300 km) can lead to escalation.
As recently as the summer, Collin Kahl, deputy secretary of defense, stated that Ukraine does not currently need missiles with a range of 300 km to destroy targets that are directly related to the war. The head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, argued a few days ago that the U.S. position on this issue had not changed. He added that the range of 84 km that the GMLRS rockets have is enough to eliminate the military facilities of the Russian army on the territory of Ukraine.
