Great Britain upgrades M270 MLRS multiple launch rocket systems to M270A2 and gets GMLRS-ER and PrSM rockets with launch ranges of up to 500 km
The British Ministry of Defense plans to upgrade the M270 MLRS multiple rocket launchers. This was announced by Alec Shelbrooke, MP.
Here's What We Know
Britain is constantly reviewing the capabilities of long-range artillery. The Ministry of Defense is ready to invest in upgrading the M270 MLRS multiple rocket launchers to the M270A2 version and in producing different types of missiles. Britain now only uses GMLRS guided high-precision projectiles.
Lockheed Martin received nearly $33 million this year to upgrade the M270 MLRS. Work will continue through the spring of 2026 in Grand Prairie, Texas; New Boston, Michigan; and Camden, Arkansas. The British Royal Artillery has 40 multiple rocket launchers in service.
The M270A2 is equipped with a main launcher with Common Fire Control System (CFCS). The combat vehicle is equipped with a new engine and transmission, and received an armored cabin. The launcher costs almost $1 million.
Along with the upgraded M270A2, Britain wants to get new missiles. The talk is about advanced missiles GMLRS-ER and PrSM with a maximum launch range of 150 km and 500 km respectively. This is a big step forward in comparison with the high-precision GMLRS missiles, which can destroy targets at a distance of 84 km.
