James Heappey, Britain's Secretary of State for the Armed Forces, has announced that the fleet of F-35B fighters will reach full operational capability two years later than planned.

Here's What We Know

In 2025, the 617th and 809th Squadrons will be able to simultaneously deploy fifth-generation F-35B Lightning II fighters. Lockheed Martin will deliver 42 aircraft by then. The Royal Navy ship HMS Prince of Wales will be the first Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier with a full combat load.

Under the contract with Lockheed Martin, Britain has purchased 48 aircraft. The United Kingdom chose the F-35B deck fighters because they have a short takeoff and vertical landing, while the F-35A and F/A-18 Super Hornet will not be able to take off and land on Queen Elisabeth-class aircraft carriers.
