Slovakia wants to buy South Korean tanks and aircrafts as part of its armed forces modernization program (until 2035).

Here's What We Know

For this purpose, the Slovak delegation visited Defense Expo Korea 2022. A visit to the factories of South Korean companies Hyundai Rotem and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is also planned.

Slovakia wants FA-50 Golden Eagle fighters and K2 Black Panther tanks. At the end of last fall, the Slovak company Letecké opravovne Trenčín and KAI signed an agreement on cooperation in the export of aircrafts. Note that Czech and Polish fighters are now closing the skies in the country because Bratislava has decommissioned Soviet MiG-29s. and deliveries of the American F-16 Fighting Falcon in Block 72 modification are delayed.

The K2 Black Panthers, on the other hand, are intended to replace the Soviet T-52 combat vehicles. However, the purchase of South Korean tanks may be delayed if Germany begins to sell Leopard 2A4s to Slovakia to replace the military hardware, which Slovakia itself is sending to Ukraine. According to recent reports, Germany will transfer 15 Leopard 2A4s, and the first tank will be shipped by the end of 2022.
