The Royal Australian Air Force received four fifth-generation F-35A Lightning II fighters

The United States has handed over another batch of fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighters to Australia.

Here's What We Know

Four planes have arrived in the country. The Royal Australian Air Force received the fighters in the basic modification - F-35A. They have joined the 77th Squadron and will be stationed at Williamtown Air Base in New South Wales.

The Royal Australian Air Force wants a fifth-generation fighter fleet of 72 aircraft. The service currently has 54 fighters.

The F-35A Lightning II flew from U.S. Air Force Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. They were flown by C-17A Globemasters and KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transports. On their way to Australia, the aircraft crossed the Pacific Ocean, landing twice in Hawaii and Guam.
