UAE stops funding the project to develop the Russian fifth-generation stealth fighter Su-75
The Russian project to build the fifth-generation stealth fighter Su-75 looks increasingly unrealizable.
Here's What We Know
The United Arab Emirates has refused to finance the program, depriving Russia of its main source of funds for research and development. A key but not the only reason is the postponement of the first flight. Moscow initially promised that the Su-75 would first take to the skies in 2023. Then the first flight was postponed to 2024. However, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, the chances of this are close to zero.
Another reason that the UAE refused to fund the development of the Su-75 is the Western sanctions, because of which Russia has lost access to foreign technology. In particular, we are talking about semiconductor products.
The third and no less important reason for the UAE to withdraw from the project is Abu Dhabi's hope to receive American fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jets. Donald Trump approved the sale of the planes to Lockheed Martin, but Joe Biden froze the deal after winning the 2020 election. The White House may change the decision after the UAE refused to fund the development of the Su-75.
