U.S. approves $3,000,000,000 sale of NASAMS surface-to-air missiles to the Kuwaiti Armed Forces
The U.S. State Department approved the sale of a medium-range missile defense system to Kuwait on October 6.
Here's What We Know
The system is an anti-aircraft missile system NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) of American-Norwegian production. The air defense system is produced by Raytheon Technologies and Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace.
NASAMS are used in many countries. For example, these anti-aircraft missile systems provide protection for the White House and the Pentagon in the United States. By the end of 2022, the United States will transfer two NASAMS batteries to Ukraine under a contract for the delivery of eight batteries. Recently the anti-aircraft missile systems were supplied to the Indian and Hungarian armies.
After the approval of the deal by the State Department it is to be considered by the US Congress within 30 days. The preliminary cost of the contract is $3 billion, but the final price will be known only after the Department of Defense signs an agreement with Raytheon.
