The United States and Norway jointly tested a solid-propellant engine for hypersonic missiles being developed under the Tactical High-Speed Offensive Ramjet for Extended Range (THOR-ER) program.
Here's What We Know
The U.S. and Norway conducted tests on Aug. 17 and 18, 2022. The tests took place at a test range located on the Norwegian island of Annøya. The U.S. Department of Defense says the test launcher performed several launches to demonstrate the viability of the technology.
According to the Pentagon, the tests were successful. In flight, the rocket was able to reach a high supersonic speed before the engine stopped working. After running out of fuel, the missile and engine fell into the water.
